Pet Dental Health

Did you know periodontal disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets? By the age three, 70% of pets have visible tartar and gingivitis.

Pet Dental Health

Proper dental care helps pets maintain more than a nice smile and fresh breath: tooth and gum disease in pets is painful and may lead to other serious health problems, such as heart and kidney disease. Preventive care is key -- brushing your pet's teeth on a regular basis and having annual cleanings is one of the most important things you can do to help prevent dental disease and keep your pet healthy and happy.

Amador Valley Veterinary Center offers a full dental examination and prophylaxis (cleaning).

What to expect when your pet receives a dental examination:

  • Your pet is placed under gentle gas anesthesia.

  • The mouth, teeth and gums are examined, scaled (tartar and plaque removed), cleaned and polished.

  • Any broken or badly infected/decayed teeth are extracted by our veterinarians.

  • A disinfectant gel is massaged gently into the gums to help prevent gingivitis.

  • Pain control medications are used, if necessary.

  • Most dental procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

Having this procedure done is important in helping your pet maintain a healthy life!

Pet Dental Health

At Amador Valley Veterinary Center, we expertly perform complete dental cleanings. Our dental radiograph (x-ray) unit has significantly improved our ability to identify fractured and abscessed teeth and the presence of tooth-root disease, thereby allowing earlier, easier (and less costly) treatments.

National Pet Dental Month
We are proud to participate in the annual National Pet Dental Awareness month each February by offering discounts on dental cleanings to our clients. In addition, we provide clients with a year-round discount if the pet has had a dental performed in the previous 18 months.
